Question: I am running Windows Server 2016 (or 2019). Can I upgrade directly to Windows Server 2022 without reinstalling?
Answer: No. Tilaa does not support "In-place Upgrades" of the Windows Operating System on our VPS platform.
Why is this not supported?
There are two main reasons why we block or advise against upgrading the OS on an existing server:
1. Licensing & KMS Activation
Our Microsoft SPLA licenses are activated via a local Key Management Service (KMS). The activation configuration is tied to the specific OS version deployed during provisioning.
Upgrading the OS manually breaks this link, causing the server to lose its activation status and potentially become unlicensed/illegal under SPLA rules.
2. Stability & Driver Compatibility
In-place upgrades on virtual hardware often lead to legacy driver conflicts (VirtIO drivers), resulting in instability, boot loops, or performance degradation. A "Clean Install" is the only way to guarantee a stable, performant server.
The Correct Upgrade Path (Migration)
If you need a newer version of Windows Server, please follow the Side-by-Side Migration method:
- Deploy: Order a new VPS with the desired OS version (e.g., Windows Server 2022).
- Migrate: Copy your data, databases, and IIS configurations from the old server to the new one via the local network.
- Test: Verify that your applications work correctly on the new OS.
- Swap: Request a move of your public IP address to the new server (or update DNS).
- Cancel: Terminate the old VPS once you are sure everything works.
