If you try to extend your C: drive in Windows Disk Management but the option is grayed out, it usually means another partition (like a Recovery partition or D: drive) is blocking the path to the unallocated space.
Windows cannot natively move partitions. To solve this, you must use a third-party partition manager via our Windows Rescue Mode.
Moving partitions involves shifting gigabytes of data on the raw disk level. If this process is interrupted (e.g., power failure or crash), you will lose data.
You MUST create a Snapshot before starting this procedure.
Your VPS needs at least 2 GB RAM to boot the Windows Rescue environment (Hiren's BootCD).
Step 1: Boot into Windows Rescue Mode
- Log in to the MyTilaa Dashboard.
- Select your Windows VPS.
- Click Start in rescue mode.
- Open the Video Display console.
- You will see the Hiren's BootCD PE (Windows 10) desktop environment loading.
Step 2: Open DiskGenius
Hiren's BootCD includes several tools. We recommend DiskGenius for this task.
- Open the Utilities folder on the desktop.
- Navigate to Hard Disk Tools > Partition Tools.
- Launch DiskGenius.
Step 3: Extend the Partition
In this example, we assume you have a C: drive, a blocking partition (e.g. F:), and Unallocated Space at the end.
- Right-click on the partition you want to grow (e.g., C:).
- Select Extend Partition from the context menu.
- A graphical view will appear. It shows your current partition and the available free space.
- Combine: Select the Unallocated Space (Free space) you want to merge into C:.
- Click Start.
Only adjust the size/end of the partition. Changing the start sector can make the OS unbootable.
Step 4: Apply and Reboot
DiskGenius will now perform the operation. Since it needs to move data from the blocking partition to the end of the disk, this can take a while depending on the amount of data stored on your D:/F: drive.
- Wait for the process bar to reach 100% and show "Complete".
- Close the application.
- Reboot your VPS via the Start Menu (or switch back to Normal Boot in the Tilaa Dashboard).
Your C: drive is now extended!
