Choosing a data center to host your data is important. The tier rating of a data center shows how reliable and performant it is.
What Are Data Center Tiers?
Data center tiers are a way to measure how strong a data center's infrastructure is. They are rated from 1 to 4, with 1 being the lowest and 4 being the highest.
The Uptime Institute gives these ratings based on:
- Downtime guarantees (or lack of)
- Ability to handle planned and unplanned disruptions
- Cost of service
Each tier has its own name:
- Tier 1: Basic Site Infrastructure
- Tier 2: Redundant Site Infrastructure Capacity Components
- Tier 3: Concurrently Maintainable Site Infrastructure
- Tier 4: Fault Tolerant Site Infrastructure
The tiers are in order from lowest to highest. Each tier includes the requirements of the previous one.
What Does Tilaa Look for to Guarantee Quality?
Tilaa only works with data centers that have a TIER 3+ rating, which is the highest in the Netherlands.
Our servers are in a high-reliability (Tier 3) data center in the Netherlands. The data center:
- Is protected from floods and fires
- Has physical security measures in place
- Has backup power supplies and emergency diesel generators
- Has a redundant network with multiple optical inputs
The data center is designed as a "building inside a building" for added security and safety.
